Are You in an Abusive Relationship?

Does your abuser–

  • constantly accuse you of being unfaithful?
  • continually criticize or ridicule you, call you names, shout at or threaten you?
  • discourage your relationships with family and friends?
  • destroy personal property or sentimental items?
  • Punch, slap, shove, bite, kick, strangle or hit you?
  • threaten you or your children?
  • anger easily when drinking alcohol or using drugs?
  • force you to have sex?
  • control all finances and force you to account in detail for what you spend?
  • use or threaten to use a weapon against you?

If you are a victim of abuse, IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT! Abusive behavior is not an appropriate response in ANY situation. You are NEVER responsible for an abuser who uses these types of actions

Are You Planning to Leave?

Things to do to protect yourself and your children–

  • Place money, extra clothing and copies of important papers with someone you trust.
  • Keep Survival's 24-hour confidential hotline number readily available.
  • Decide now where you will go first if you must leave in a hurry.
  • Teach your children how and when to call 9-1-1 in the case of an emergency.
  • Tell a neighbor or friend about the abuse or violence and ask them to call the police if they hear suspicious noises coming from your home.
  • Avoid arguments in possibly dangerous places, near weapons or in a room with no access to outside doors.
  • Develop a support network from family, social groups, churches, school and work places.

Do You Have Legal Options?

Criminal Charges–

If you or other loved ones have been physically injured, threatened, raped, harassed or stalked, you may report these crimes to the police. Your abuser may be arrested and possibly put in jail.

Restraining/Protective Orders–

You may file for a civil court order that directs your abuser to stay away from you. Protective orders can also evict your abuser from your home, grant support or child custody, or ban the abuser from having or carrying weapons.

Survival staff are available to talk with you about your options and assist you in taking legal action.
